Buttermilk Waffles

Buttermilk waffles with berry sauce and whipped cream. Glass of milk, plate of waffles, and jar of berry sauce.

Our Friday family night tradition is breakfast for dinner or “brinner” as we call it. I use our raw milk to make butter and buttermilk every week. And with that buttermilk I have exactly what we need for this recipe. (From one gallon of milk you get enough cream to make 2 cups of buttermilk and 1/4 lb. of butter.) Of course, you can use store-bought cream to make butter and buttermilk, but I love drinking raw milk so this is what we do.

Buttermilk Waffles

This recipe is simple but incredibly effective. I made it once and haven’t bought the mix since. As always, it’s as simple as 1-2-3.

  1. Mix wet and dry ingredients separately before combining.
  2. Rest for 10 minutes.
  3. Bake in waffle maker per your maker’s instructions.

Triple Berry Sauce

We almost always eat buttermilk waffles with my homemade triple berry sauce. It’s tart yet sweet enough to add a nice oomph to the waffles.

Whipped Cream

Make your own whipped cream or use store bought for a wonderful topping.

Other Toppings

Nutella and bananas are another winners with these waffles. It’s much sweeter than the triple berry sauce but sometimes you just want something sweet! You can also always go for the classic butter and maple syrup.

Homemade Butter

If you haven’t made it before, homemade butter is well worth it. Especially butter from raw milk but you can make butter with cream from the store. Homemade butter really does taste better! It’s a great addition to these waffles.

Description

This is a very traditional and common buttermilk recipe, it’s simple but absolutely divine.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 c. Flour
  • 1 tsp. Baking Soda
  • 2 tsp. Baking Powder
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 2 tbsp Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1/3 C. Melted and Cooled Butter
  • 2 c. Buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients in medium bowl.
  2. Mix wet ingredients in a separate bowl.
  3. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, do not over mix. Some lumps are fine.
  4. Rest uncovered for 10 minutes to allow the gluten to absorb the liquid. It will also increase the flavor and result in softer, lighter waffle.
  5. While batter rests, turn on waffle maker to heat up.
  6. After 10 minutes, grease the waffle maker, and pour 1/3-1/2 cup of batter into the waffle maker. This will depend on the size of your waffle maker but you want about .5 to 1 inch of room around the edge to allow the waffle to expand.
  7. My waffle maker takes about 2-3 minutes per waffle. This will also vary depending on your waffle maker.
  8. Serve hot with your choice of toppings!

Notes

We love homemade whipped cream and triple berry sauce on these waffles. Nutella and bananas are also amazing! Or go back to basics and just add homemade butter with maple syrup. These waffles are packed with flavor, they don’t need much to elevate them, and are sure to impress any guests in your home.
